Description
Fibroblasts are a major cell component of the dermis. Their primary role is to develop connective tissue by secreting proteins such as collagen. The main function of fibroblasts is to maintain the structural integrity of connective tissues by continuously secreting precursors of the extracellular matrix, hence they play a critical role in wound healing.
Histology
After several days of culture, fibroblasts spontaneously start to organize themselves.

Seeding of fibroblasts in a collagen solution induces immediate contraction resulting in a collagen-fibroblast lattice (discs).
